Ireland’s ocean economy has been valued at €1.4 billion in a new report published by NUI Galway.
Some 17,000 people are employed in the marine sector, which had a turnover of €3.4 billion in 2007, the report by NUIG’s Socio-Economic Marine Research Unit has found.
The study is based on 2007 figures, being the most recent time period for which full data was available.
The gross value added calculation of €1.4 billion represented 1 per cent of gross domestic product at that time.
