BRITAIN: A British police officer was stabbed to death and four others were wounded yesterday in a "counter-terrorist" raid in Manchester linked to the recent discovery of ricin in London, police said.
One officer was attacked and received multiple knife wounds to the chest, of which he later died.
At least one other officer was stabbed in the arm and was in serious condition, a police spokeswoman said.
The three others were only slightly injured.
Three men were arrested in the operation.
"Greater Manchester police officers attended an address in north Manchester with immigration officials to detain a man under counter-terrorism legislation," the spokeswoman said.
"Two further men in their 20s were arrested under the Counter Terrorism Act 2000, in connection with an ongoing operation with the Metropolitan Police Service Anti-Terrorism Branch," she said. The road where the incident took place was cordoned off, and the building where the operation was carried out had all its curtains drawn. All five police officers served with the Manchester police department. No immigration officials were injured during the raid.
On Monday four men accused of plotting to use the deadly poison ricin appeared in a London court for the first time. All four were charged under the terrorism Act and a separate chemical weapons Act for the alleged plot. The poison was found at a London flat last week. - (AFP)
