ITALY:An Italian policeman who shot and killed a soccer fan on Sunday is being investigated for involuntary manslaughter, according to Arezzo police commissioner Vincenzo Giacobbe.

"In my opinion, judging from the ongoing investigation, the charges could be worse," Mr Giacobbe said at a news conference broadcast yesterday by Sky Italia.

Gabriele Sandri, a Lazio fan, was killed after being struck by a bullet fired from a policeman at a motorway rest stop in the Tuscan city of Arezzo in central Italy.

Police said yesterday that Sandri's killing was a "tragic error" after the officer fired warning shots into the air, trying to defuse a clash between Lazio and Juventus fans.

Sandri's death forced the cancellation of two first-division matches on Sunday and led to the suspension of a third after fan violence erupted inside and outside stadiums.

As Italy are playing Scotland in a European Championship game on Saturday, there are no first division games in Italy this weekend. The Italian Soccer Federation complied with Italian sports minister Giovanna Melandri's request to suspend Sunday's second and third division games.

An interior ministry committee ruled to ban "organised trips by large groups of violent fans" travelling from one city to another to watch games, news agency Ansa reported, citing the committee. - (Bloomberg)
