The Department of Agriculture has said today it is not concerned at the discovery of a sheep in a slaughter plant in Navan in Co Meath which displayed "suspicious symptoms".

The sheep was brought to the Irish Country Meats (ICM) slaughter plant in Navan yesterday by a farmer from Co Cavan.

Department spokesman Mr Paul Savage told ireland.comtoday samples from the sheep were taken merely "as a precautionary measure" and were sent to the Purbright Laboratory in Surrey to be tested.

The ICM plant has been closed since the discovery.

Preliminary results are expected by Sunday but Mr Savage emphasised the Department had "no major concerns about that animal".

Meanwhile tests carried out on sick animals discovered in Cos Wicklow and Tipperary have proved negative.

Mr Savage said the latest update on the foot-and-mouth situation in the Republic is "it's all-clear round the country".
