A Garda spokesman said the spill occurred between the southbound junctions at Abbeyleix (J3) and Cashel (J8). The stretch between J3 and J4 has since been cleared.

Diversions have been put in place and motorists are advised to use alternative routes. The road is expected to reopen by 4pm, the spokesman added.
