The Oireachtas committee investigating Judge Brian Curtin is now expected to hold its official hearings towards the end of next month.

The committee, which is to report to the Dáil on allegations relating to the discovery of child pornography on Judge Curtin's computer, met for five hours yesterday in Leinster House. Chaired by Fianna Fáil TD Denis O'Donovan, it heard reports from committee staff on the work carried out to date.

A report by independent experts on records held on Judge Curtin's computer was completed last month.

The report also examined financial and other personal records to see if they were in any way connected or linked to information and files discovered on his computer.

Members of the committee were not given details of the report, which will be formally presented to them when hearings get under way next month.

The committee also considered issuing an order for further computer files and records related to Judge Curtin's computer.

The date for the start of formal hearings, likely to be held in camera, has yet to be fixed, but members were told it was now likely to be towards the end of October.

The committee will then take a number of weeks to finalise and submit its final report on the affair to the Oireachtas.

The Oireachtas can then decide on whether to impeach Judge Curtin.

Judge Curtin was charged with possession of pornography following a Garda search in May 2002.

He pleaded not guilty and was acquitted on direction of the court in 2004 as the search warrant in the case was out of date.

He brought unsuccessful High Court and Supreme Court challenges to the planned Oireachtas inquiry into whether to impeach him.

It is highly unlikely that the committee will have its work completed by November 1st.
