Jose Maria Olazabal believes the system of picking Europe's Ryder Cup side should be changed.

Jose Maria Olazabal believes the system of picking Europe's Ryder Cup side should be changed.

The Spaniard also claimed captain Sam Torrance's decision to choose Jesper Parnevik as his second wild card pick had been made a long time ago.

Olazabal had to win the BMW International Open in Munich at the weekend to edge Welshman Phillip Price out of the 10th and last automatic spot but finished only 13th.

He said: "A change is needed as soon as possible to the system of electing players for the Ryder Cup team".

It was obvious that Torrance was not going to choose me," he told www.marca.es.

"He made some comments in May and then I slowly realised that my chances of being in the Ryder Cup team were nearly impossible".

But Olazabal, who has only played in 10 tournaments in Europe this year, said he will not change his schedule to attempt to make one of the 10 automatic places next time around.

He said: "From now on, I am going to go as a free player and my decisions and the tournaments that I decide to play will not have to necessarily coincide with the European circuit or with anybody else".

"It doesn't feel either good or bad to not be chosen. I have just considered the situation."
