An 800-year-old water culvert has been uncovered in Adare, Co Limerick. Limerick County Council is carrying out roadworks in the village, which has won Tidy Towns awards a number of times in the past.
The culvert was discovered close to the medieval Trinitarian Abbey. Pottery shards, shells, animal bones, nails and knives were found during the excavation of a number of pits beneath the main Limerick-Tralee road passing through the village.
Ms Sarah McCutcheon, a Limerick archaeologist, said that the historic finds would be recovered and preserved.
