Old friends reunited in the Faroe Islands

Soccer: Former St Patrick's Athletic manager Johnny McDonnell has been appointed as assistant-coach of the Faroe Islands

Soccer:Former St Patrick's Athletic manager Johnny McDonnell has been appointed as assistant-coach of the Faroe Islands. McDonnell will work alongside former Republic of Ireland manager Brian Kerr in the north Atlantic outpost.

McDonnell played under Kerr during two spells at St Patrick’s Athletic and captained the 1996 title winning side. The pair also worked together when McDonnell took up the reins at Richmond Park when Kerr was installed as director of football.

Kerr has enjoyed a measure of success since taking up the role in the Faroes last April, finishing bottom of their qualifying group but securing an historic 2-1 win over Lithuania and a 1-1 draw with Austria.

McDonnell, who left St Pat’s in January of last year, had been linked with the Republic of Ireland under-21s post vacated by Don Given after his work behind the scenes at international underage levels.
