Omagh renewal plans announced

Plans for a £9.1 million arts centre and riverside regeneration scheme for Omagh town centre were announced yesterday

Plans for a £9.1 million arts centre and riverside regeneration scheme for Omagh town centre were announced yesterday. Work on the project, which is being funded by the Department of Social Development, the Arts Council and Omagh District Council, will begin later this month.

The plans incorporate a new arts centre, commercial floor-space, a river walk-way, environmental improvements, and a pedestrian bridge.

Local SDLP Assembly member, Mr Joe Byrne, said it would help put Omagh back on its feet after a "Real IRA" bomb killed 29 people four years ago.

"It is a major project in the regeneration of Omagh town, particularly after the devastation suffered in 1998," he said.

"It should help Omagh realise its potential as a regional growth town."

A Department of Social Development spokesman said the project was vital to the town's long-term future.

"Regenerating the river-front will revive the heart of the town and provide renewed confidence and hope in the future of Omagh.

"The opening up of previously land-locked and derelict land on the riverside will enable the town to expand its commercial centre," he said.

Mr Nigel Dodds, former Social Development Minister in the Northern Executive, said: "I am pleased to see Omagh getting the attention it deserves."

The project follows the announcement late last year of a £14 million investment in a new further and higher education college in the town.

The private sector is currently investing about £100 million in commercial projects, including a £15 million shopping centre on the site of the old Royal Arms Hotel.
