Two separate investigations have begun after a man in his early 20s died following a crash in Co Donegal early this morning.

Gardaí in Buncrana and the Garda Ombudsman have opened investigations into the single-vehicle crash in the village of Muff, Co. Donegal, at about 1am today.

Paul McMonagle, from Derry, was in a car with his father and another relative when it crashed into a wall just outside the Border village.

Two men were brought to Letterkenny General Hospital, and the male passenger (22) was pronounced dead on arrival. Injuries to the second man are not believed to be life threatening.

It is understood a passing Garda vehicle gave chase after a car was seen parked on the roadside near Muff and the driver spun the vehicle out on to the road and sped off.

Officers are investigating reports a third man fled the scene after the crash.

Gardaí have asked anyone with information on the incident to contact Buncrana Garda Station on 074-9320540.

It has emerged tonight that the victim was was facing a Real IRA death threat. Mr McMonagle, from Leafair Gardens in the Shantallow area of the city, told the Derry Journalthis week he had been warned by the PSNI that his life was in danger from the Real IRA.

Elsewhere in the North, the PSNI is investigating a fatal road collision involving three cars that took place in Derry earlier today.

The crash happened on the Branch Road, and diversions are in place.
