ONE man has died and six others were being treated for knife wounds yesterday following a series of stabbings over the weekend in Dublin, Wicklow, Cavan, Cork and Westmeath.

The fatal stabbing happened on Friday evening at Tymonville Road, Tallaght, when Mark O'Keefe (20) was stabbed in the stomach and back in a fight involving about 30 youths.

One man was detained for questioning following the incident but was later released without charge and two kitchen knives and other implements were also recovered near the scene.

A man has been questioned about the stabbing of a man in a house a Greghorne, Bailieboro, Co Cavan, early on Saturday.

The 22 year old victim received stomach wounds and is recovering in Cavan Hospital. A file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.

The gardai are seeking information on the stabbing of a Chinese national who was stabbed in the back at 8.30 am. on Saturday in Athlone.

A Garda spokesman said the 20 year old is recovering in Beaumont Hospital after what appeared to be a unprovoked attack.

In Youghal, two Cork men were attacked and pulled from their car by three men who approached them looking for cigarette papers at 4 a.m. One of men was stabbed in the back and another in the arm. They were treated at University Hospital, Cork, and discharged themselves following treatment.
