A gunman opened fire at a primary school in the town of Mardin in Turkey's troubled southeast today, killing one teacher and wounding four schoolchildren, security officials said.
The officials had earlier said the fatality was a schoolchild.
It was not immediately clear whether there was one or more gunmen involved in the attack.
The wounded children were rushed to a local hospital, the officials said. Police erected checkpoints on roads leading out of the town in an effort to catch the attacker.
Nusaybin is located between the regional capital of Diyarbakir and the Syrian border.
There was no immediate indication that the shooting was linked to recent political tensions in the southeast.
Tensions have been running high in Turkey's impoverished, mainly ethnic Kurdish for weeks since the bombing of a bookstore in the town of Semdinli widely blamed on members of the security services.
At least six people have been killed in daily street protests over the bombing.
Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan visited Semdinli to plead for calm.
