"Operation Freeflow", the annual Garda operation to manage increased traffic caused by Christmas shoppers in Dublin, begins today.

The initiative, which is in its tenth year, has been drawn up by the Garda and the Dublin Transportation Office in co-operation with local authorities and transport service providers.

While the emphasis is on preventing gridlock, the Garda authorities will also be putting a heavy emphasis on safety, particularly drink-driving.

Commuters who feel they have to use their cars were urged to avail of parking at a park-and-ride area and continue their journey into town by Dart, bus or Luas. In addition to regular broadcasts from AA Roadwatch, Dublin City Anna Livia FM 103.2 will have "Freeflow" announcements every four minutes between 7am and 10am and between 4.30pm and 7pm.

Appealing for public support, Minister of State at the Department of Transport Ivor Callely said: "I would very much like to remind everyone that the success of 'Operation Freeflow' depends on the co-operation of all."

A dedicated website, www.freeflow.ie, will provide information on the various public transport services, including bus and train timetables, Luas locations, park-and-ride facilities, as well as maps and guides, giving clear directions on the most suitable transport modes depending on location.
