Zanzibar - The chairman of Tanzania's main opposition party insisted yesterday that at least 280 people had been killed in weekend violence on Zanzibar and called for the resignation of the islands' president.
Police have denied opposition allegations that a mass grave held 150 bodies near the port town of Wete in the north of Pemba, the smaller of Zanzibar's two main islands, and journalists have been unable to verify the reports. "We think the number of people who died in Zanzibar from Pemba and Unguja [Zanzibar Island] is 280," Mr Ibrahim Lipumba, chairman of the Civic United Front, said.
