The president of the Pro-Life Campaign has accused political opponents of the abortion amendment of trying to frighten the electorate into voting No.

Fianna Fáil Senator Des Hanafin said the behaviour of some Labour and Fine Gael opponents "gives politics a bad name".

"They have, on some occasions, tried to frighten the electorate into voting No. When that doesn't work, they have adopted a general policy of creating as much confusion as possible in the public mind and then telling those who are confused to vote No," he claimed.

"If they don't have any strong arguments which will convince people to vote No, it is wrong to take the easy option and suggest that people vote No if they don't know.

"I disagree with Michael Noonan when he suggests that women's lives will be put at risk because they won't receive emergency medical care.

"The Institute of Obstetrics and Gynaecologists has rejected such ill-informed statements as causing needless anxiety among women. It should be beneath politicians to use scare tactics to bolster their side of the debate."
