The High Court has refused to continue a temporary order prohibiting the demolition of a derelict house in Wexford town after being told that the building constituted a danger to the public. Mr Justice Lavan said the owner and local authority must act to protect people.

Last Friday, Mr Justice McKechnie granted an interim order to Mr Oliver Canty, South Main Street, Wexford, halting demolition of the property which, it is believed, was constructed in the last decade of the 19th century.

Yesterday, the court heard that Westlands Villa, St John's Drive, Wexford, was being protected on a 24-hour basis because of the threat it posed to people. It is owned by Mr James O'Connor, a solicitor, of North Main Street, Wexford.

On March 12th, planning permission was given to Greentree Developments Ltd for the erection of houses in the area around the villa on condition that the building be retained and restored.
