Order to extradite mother for sex abuse of her sons

A mother convicted of sexually abusing her two sons in Wales has been ordered to be extradited to Britain

A mother convicted of sexually abusing her two sons in Wales has been ordered to be extradited to Britain. The 41-year-old woman was arrested in Newbridge, Co Kildare, in 1995. She fled to Ireland in November 1992, while on leave from a six-year prison sentence imposed by Swansea Crown Court.

There was controversy following her arrest in Ireland in October 1995, when it was disclosed she had been employed by FAS to work in a youth club.

Dublin District Court heard she had been convicted of allowing her son, then aged between 12 and 13, to have sexual intercourse with her by consent.

She also indecently assaulted this son and aided and abetted a man to bugger another son aged between 11 and 12 years.

All the offences occurred while the woman was living in Dyfed, Wales, between July 1989 and May 1990.

Defence solicitor Mr Dara Robinson said since the woman's arrest the case had been the subject of an unsuccessful appeal to the High Court.

His client was now waiving her right to any further appeal and was consenting to her extradition.

Judge John McDonnell said he was satisfied the offences corresponded to Irish law and remanded the woman in custody pending her handing over to the British authorities.
