GARDAI are concerned there may be an outbreak of gang feuding in Limerick following the shooting dead of John Kenne, a criminal figure from the Southill area of the city.
Detectives recovered a shotgun which they believe was used in the murder early last Friday morning. A forensic examination is being carried out on the weapon, found hidden near where Mr Keane (26) was shot outside his home in O'Malley Park, on the outskirts of Limerick.
Mr Keane is believed to have been involved in drugs and illegal money lending and recently was reported to have threatened others criminals in Southill. There are now fears the murder will spark retaliation from his criminal associates.
Supt Pat O'Boyle and Insp Frank O'Brien of Roxboro Garda station said the preliminary results of a post mortem examination suggested Mr Keane died from a single gunshot wound.
State Pathologist, Dr John Harbison, reported evidence of at gunshot wound to Mr Keane upper body. There were also head and facial injuries, which Supt O'Boyle said were consistent with a struggle between Mr Keane and his attackers.
Senior gardai would not comment on the theory that the victim was involved in crime and money lending in Sothill.
Gardai confirmed two men are being sought for questioning. The scene was still sealed off at the weekend as Garda Technical, Bureau experts examined the house and surrounding area for clues.
Supt O'Boyle said there had been a good response from the public who had given valuable information to who were returning home at around 3 a.m. on Friday and taxi drivers working in the area to contact them at 061-419555 or the confidential telephone 1800-666111.
