Mr Foley announced the engagement at his farewell dinner for 400 people at the US ambassador’s residence in the Phoenix Park.

He has been involved in a series of farewell events in recent days and last Friday he paid a courtesy call to Taoiseach Brian Cowen to mark his departure.

Mr Foley is expected to return to business interests when he leaves his post.

Before entering government service, he gained more than 25 years of experience in senior management and founded a private equity investing business.
