WORKERS AT B3 Cable Solutions were summoned to a meeting in Longford yesterday and told the plant was to shut as no new owner could be found. Receiver and manager of B3 Cable Solutions Alan Flanagan of Deloitte said an exhaustive search had failed to find a buyer for the facility.
The closure will result in the loss of 104 jobs.
B3 Cable Solutions, which manufactured copper-based cable for Eircom and other customers, has provided employment at its plant at Aghafad, near Longford town, for three decades.
Describing it as a “black day”, Longford-Westmeath TD James Bannon (FG) said “this will be devastating news for Co Longford. It is equivalent to the loss of 1,000 jobs in Dublin.”
Local Fianna Fáil TD Peter Kelly said: “It is a very black day for Longford; a very sad day for the town.”
A statement issued on behalf of B3 Cable Solutions said yesterday: “Since appointment on Wednesday, June 30th, 2010, Alan Flanagan of Deloitte, the receiver of B3 Cable Solutions (Ireland) Ltd, has been engaged in an extensive process to sell the business and assets of the company as a going concern. Unfortunately, this has not proved possible, and reluctantly Mr Flanagan is now forced to close the B3 plant at Aghafad, Longford, and dispose of the assets on a piecemeal basis.”
