London - More than £137 million is "frittered away" every day by people in Britain on non-essential goods such as magazines, snacks and CDs, a survey reported yesterday.

Barclays bank said Britons were increasingly taking a "spend-now-pay-later" attitude to life with 32 per cent parting with more than £3 a day on non-essential items and 10 per cent spending more than £9.

Just 18 per cent of people said they frittered away nothing on a daily basis.

And contrary to popular belief, men spend substantially more than women, accounting for £76 million of the total figure. Men were likely to spend when at the petrol station - with 31 per cent making a purchase while stopping to fill up.
