Rome - More than 250 people have been killed in a fresh massacre in the eastern Kivu region, a Roman Catholic missionary news agency reported yesterday.
"It seems that the mass killings were once again Rwandan retaliation following a Mai Mai [Congolese tribesmen] attack," the MISNA agency said in a statement.
It said the massacres were carried out in the Burhinyi and Ngweshe groups of villages.
"The victims were mainly elderly men, women and children, killed during alleged anti-Interhamwe [Rwandan Hutu ex-militiamen] mop-up operations carried out by the troops of the Congolese Democratic Coalition (RCD)," it said.
