PAEDOPHILE priest Brendan Smyth (71) will he extradited from Northern Ireland today. The RUC intends to arrest Smyth as he leaves Magilligan Prison this morning and take him to Limavady to appear before a special sitting of the local magistrates.

After the extradition proceedings have been completed he will be flown from Eglinton Airport to Dublin. He will then be transferred to the Bridewell Garda station before his appearance at a special sitting of Dublin District Court.

Smyth is expected to face 74 charges of child sex abuse. The charges follow an extensive Garda investigation in areas where Smyth served while a member of the Norbertine Canons, based at Holy Trinity Abbey, Kilnacrott, Co Cavan. These include Dublin, Cork, Cavan, Kerry and Mayo. Senior detectives also interviewed him on several occasions while he was in custody in Northern Ireland.
