DUP leader Ian Paisley today said the late Catholic priest and human rights activist Monsignor Denis Faul sent him a death-bed letter saying Catholics are depending on Rev Paisley.

After a 40-minute meeting with Taoiseach Bertie Ahern and Prime Minister Tony Blair at Stormont, party Rev Paisley and DUP deputy leader Peter Robinson said the Northern Assembly would need to meet over the summer if devolution is to be restored by November.

He said republicans must do more before they could be accepted as embracing democracy.

He also revealed that Msgr Faul, who clashed with Reve Paisley him and with republicans over many years, sent a message to him before he died last week.

"One of the last things he did from his death bed was that he sent me a personal message that said Ian do not give in," the DUP leader said.

"He said he had represented those families who wanted the bodies of their loved ones returned by the IRA. His message was that the Roman Catholic people depend on you as well."
