Ian Paisley Jnr last night confirmed he is to be nominated by his father to re-join the Northern Ireland Policing Board after stepping down as a junior minister.

The Democratic Unionist North Antrim Assembly member has accepted an offer to become one of his party's representatives on the board.

Ironically, Mr Paisley will replace his DUP colleague Jeffrey Donaldson after the Lagan Valley representative was this week promoted to the ministerial role he vacated.

The son of Stormont's First Minister resigned as junior minister last week after months of intense media scrutiny about his links with north Antrim businessman Seymour Sweeney.

Mr Paisley has vehemently denied any wrongdoing but admitted the persistent focus on his affairs was detracting from the good work he said his party was doing in the power-sharing government.

Last night Mr Paisley, who previously sat on the board before he became junior minister, said he was delighted to retake his position.

"I have been offered to take a position on the Policing Board and I was very pleased to accept," he said. "I spent five very happy years working on the board and I look forward to taking up the challenge again."
