Leading unionists, Sinn Féin's chief negotiator and a senior SDLP figure are in the US for St Patrick's Day.

Ulster Unionist deputy leader Danny Kennedy, recently elected to the Assembly for Newry and Armagh, and Ian Paisley jnr, also returned to represent North Antrim, are part of a delegation sent by the policing board.

The DUP is not sending any other political representatives to attend functions in the US over St Patrick's weekend.

The board representation also includes chairman Prof Sir Desmond Rea and vice-chairman Barry Gilligan. SDLP representative Dolores Kelly is also included on the delegation.

Sinn Féin's Martin McGuinness is also in the US for a series of engagements in both Washington DC and New York.

The SDLP's Alban Maginness has also left for a series of meetings. Party leader Mark Durkan, accompanied by deputy leader Alasdair McDonnell, is to travel to the US next week and is not attending St Patrick's Day events there this year.

The policing board delegation has already attended a function hosted by the Northern Ireland Press Photographers' Association. Talks were also held with Paula Dobriansky, President George Bush's special envoy to Northern Ireland, who succeeded Mitchell Reiss last month.
