HAMBURG - A German court jailed a Palestinian woman for 12 years yesterday for her part in the hijacking in 1977 of a Lufthansa flight to Somalia and the murder of its pilot, writes Den is Staunton.
Souhaila Andrawes (43) was one of four Palestinians who commandeered the aircraft, after it took off from Majorca, holding 87 passengers and crew hostage in support of the release of Red Army Faction terrorists from German jails.
She was the only one of the hijackers who survived a shoot-out with West German special forces at Mogadishu airport at the end of the five-day siege but sustained injuries and is still unable to walk without crutches. The court ruled that she could serve the remainder of her jail sentence in Norway.
