The Palestinian Authority said today it would deal with Israeli right-wing leader Mr Ariel Sharon after exit polls said he had ousted Prime Minister Mr Ehud Barak in a landslide election result.
"We will deal with Sharon who had been elected by the Israeli people", Palestinian President Yasser Arafat's adviser Mr Nabil Abu Rdainah told Reuters after two television exit polls showed that Sharon had won today's vote.
"What concerns us is the commitment to the peace agreements we signed with the Israeli governments", he added.
But Palestinian Information Minister Mr Yasser Abed Rabbo described Mr Sharon's election as the most foolish event in Israel's history. He said that Mr Sharon's hardline policies would kill the peace process.
