THE GREEK Prime Minister, Mr Andreas Papandreou, broke his seven week silence in hospital yesterday, saying he wanted to see President Costis Stephanopoulos a move that could signal he is ready to resign or name an official deputy.
The government spokesman, Mr Telemachos Hytiris, said the meeting would take place in the next few days when Mr Stephanopoulos returns from France.
Mr Papandreou, fighting for his life in hospital since November 20th, announced his desire to meet the president just before his ruling Panhellenic Socialist Movement (Pasok) defeated a censure motion in parliament.
Pasok defeated the motion 168 to 118 but failed to refute the main opposition charge that Greece is leaderless.
