Junior Cert: Music: Yesterday's Junior Cert music exam struck a better note than previous years, with higher and ordinary level papers described as reasonable and providing enough challenges for students.
Some students have been expressing disappointment with the Irish music question in which students are asked to identify two instruments which they heard.
Ms Evelyn Hearns, a music teacher with Alexandra College, Dublin, said: "It was very difficult - you're depending on students' own ability."
Students are given a choice of six options in which to choose the two instruments. However, "a certain element of the student's own musicianship is required", said Ms Hearns.
Some of the wording in the set works question on the higher-level paper was described as too convoluted and may have presented some difficulty for weaker readers, according to teachers.
Mr John Frances Murphy, a music teacher with Holy Family Secondary School, Newbridge, Co Kildare, said he was surprised that there were two questions on Handel since there is such a wide variety on the course.
Overall, the papers were described as fair, with few surprises for students, though higher-level students have reacted more positively than ordinary level to the papers.
