A paramedic was injured and an ambulance was damaged during an attack on an ambulance crew responding to an emergency call-out in the Waterside area of Derry yesterday morning.
The two ambulance paramedics were treating a patient with a stab wound to the stomach when they were approached by a crowd of youths, four males and four females.
"One of the crew went into the ambulance to get some medical equipment to treat the patient", said station officer Sammy Nicholl from the ambulance depot at Altnagelvin Hospital.
"When he was inside the vehicle, he heard a noise coming from the driver's cabin and when he went in there, he saw a man standing inside. The crew member removed the man from the ambulance and returned to help his colleague attend to the patient. Suddenly one of the crowd ran up and kicked him on the side.
"Both paramedics continued to work with the patient, who had a serious stab wound to the abdomen and they succeeded in relaying him to hospital.
