The family of a missing American student, who could be living in Ireland, have begun a week-long visit here in a desperate attempt to contact their only son.

It has been four years since Matt Mullaney last spoke to his family in Scituate, Massachusetts.

Yesterday his heartbroken parents Michael and Terri and his only sister Meg arrived in Ireland where they plan to spend a week searching for their missing son.

It is the third time that Michael Mullaney has come to Ireland to look for his son.

Now aged 25, Matt has been missing since he disappeared from his student apartment in Italy in February 2003.

He had just completed three weeks at the the Angel Academy of Art in Florence when he disappeared. The 25-year-old was last seen by a doorman leaving the Lion's Fountain Irish pub in Florence in the early hours of February 1st, 2003.

He never returned to his apartment where he left behind his passport, and has never contacted family or friends since.

"We know he wanted to go to Amsterdam for a weekend and we think he might have met people in the bar that night who asked him if he wanted to hitch a lift with them to Amsterdam," said Mr Mullaney.

Since his disappearance there have been various reported sightings of Matt. In July 2003 the Mullaney family was notified by a Donegal woman that she had sat beside Matt on a ferry from Hollyhead to Dublin.
