The parents of a Swiss student murdered on the west coast of Ireland today visited the site where their teenage daughter's body was found.

Hans-Peter and Arlette Riedo were taken by gardai to the waste ground at Lough Atalia in Galway where 17-year-old Manuela was discovered last October.

They asked to be allowed to retrace their daughter's last movements away from the media glare but said they are praying that they get justice.

In a statement, issued through the Health Service Executive (HSE), the couple also thanked the Irish people who supported them.

"Many people who we do not know have written to us, have had Masses said and have given us flowers for Manuela. We would like to thank you and say that it has helped us greatly through this difficult time," they said.

"We extend our gratitude to all the people who have made our visit to Ireland possible.

"We would also like to thank all the Irish people who attended Manuela's Funeral Mass in Switzerland, and all who have lit candles and prayed for us.

"We hope and pray that for Manuela justice will be given."

Mr and Mrs Riedo said they would not be talking to reporters during their visit and asked for their privacy to be respected.

It is understood they flew into Dublin on Monday night, having expressed a hope to visit the scene of Manuela's last moments at her funeral.

Manuela, from Bern in Switzerland, was in Galway for an intensive two-week English course when she was killed and dumped alongside the main railway line out of the city.

Her body was found on the morning of October 9th by a man walking to work through the popular Lough Atalia shortcut to the city centre.

She had only arrived in Ireland three days before with another 42 pupils from the Swiss capital to brush up on her English, ahead of pre-university school exams.

Gerald Barry, 28, with an address at Rosan Glas, Rahoon, Co Galway, is currently on remand at Castlerea prison charged with the killing.
