Jakarta - The Indonesian government has accorded de facto recognition to a faction of the Indonesian Democracy Party led by the popular politician, Ms Megawati Sukarnoputri, by allowing it to hold a congress in Bali next week. The move was seen here as a partial victory for Ms Megawati, a presidential hopeful and the daughter of the country's founding president, Mr Sukarno.

Meanwhile, a crowd of several hundred people attacked the house of a pro-reform businessman in Jakarta yesterday afternoon, hurling rocks at it and warning him to stop collecting and distributing funds to student reformists.
