Paris - France's Gaullist RPR party said yesterday it had suspended the mayor of Paris, Mr Jean Tiberi, as head of the party's Paris section for keeping phantom voters on his party membership rolls.
Mr Tiberi remains mayor of the French capital, but the suspension has dealt a severe blow to his prospects of re-election next year. The RPR, fearing the left could take over the Paris city hall if Mr Tiberi was running, has unsuccessfully been trying to convince him to renounce standing for re-election.
