None of the five people was injured in the incident.
A Bus Éireann spokesman said the bus passed a vehicle test in July and was serviced at the end of last month.
He said it was too early to say what caused the fire.
Twenty passengers, including a number of schoolchildren, had earlier been dropped off in Fermoy by the bus.
