A train full of Christmas travellers was left stranded in Co Tipperary last night after striking debris on the track.

A train full of Christmas travellers was left stranded in Co Tipperary last night after striking debris on the track.

The Dublin-bound train, travelling from Cork, was damaged when a lorry struck a bridge and debris fell on to the track as the train approached it.

The incident happened at about 5pm just 300 metres outside Templemore station, near Thurles.

An Iarnród Éireann spokesman said: "A lorry hit the bridge near Templemore, debris fell on to the track as the train approached it, and it ran over the debris."

The train, which had left Cork at 3.30pm, was due to arrive in Heuston Station at 6.35pm.
