FEARS THAT the recession and pressures on farming and rural communities might lead to the cancellation of one of the Republic’s most unique theatrical events have proved unfounded.
After an absence of five years the village of Ballylinan, Co Laois, will this week stage its Passion Play which involves 200 people from the area in the village hall.
“We were very concerned we would not get the people out this time round because of so many negative things happening, especially in rural areas,” said Anna May McHugh, chair of the committee which runs the event.
Ms McHugh, better known for her stewardship of the National Ploughing Association, said she was delighted when volunteers came forward to stage the play.
“We first staged it in 1992 and again, the following year. We revived it in 2000 for the Millennium and ran it again in 2005.
“But I have to say I was worried about trying it again this year,” she said.
“There have also been major changes in the village which has grown because of the Celtic Tiger to perhaps around 1,000 people and we feared this might have diluted the community spirit.
“We have proof positive that volunteerism and community is alive and well because there was a tremendous response and we have actors from five to 86 in the cast, ” she added
The production, beginning with Our Lord’s Triumphant Entry into Jerusalem and culminating with the Resurrection, has been produced by local teacher, Sheila Graham, since its inception.
“She is marvellous but so are the whole cast who come from all walks of life . . . and from new and old residents,” Ms McHugh . Local farmer PJ Hickey will play the part of Judas and another farmer, Pascal Lacey, will play the part of Jesus Christ.
As for the youngest actor, she will be Kate Graham, a grandchild of the producer. The oldest person taking part will be James Farrell, who worked in the motor trade until his retirement, and he will play the part of Andrew the apostle.
Already the show, which will run on March 26th , 27th, 28th, 30th, 31st and April 2nd, has one award under its belt having taken top honours at the St Patrick’s Day parade in Athy.
