`Patton' star dies, aged 71

George C. Scott, the actor and director best known for his portrayal of Gen George S. Patton, has died, aged 71, in California.

Scott, who won an Oscar in 1970 for his role in Patton, had been dogged by ill health in recent years.

He was last on the big screen in director Sidney Lumet's remake of Gloria.

Among his recent TV projects were the remakes of Inherit the Wind, which screened in May this year, and 12 Angry Men, for which he won an Emmy Award.

Born in 1927, he enlisted in the US Marine Corps in 1945. He made his film debut in 1959, starring in The Hanging Tree.

Scott refused to accept his 1971 Oscar award, condemning the Oscars as "offensive, barbarous and innately corrupt".

He was married five times, twice to actress Colleen Dewhurst. The couple married in 1960 and divorced five years later only to remarry in 1967.
