A showing of a 1967 film on Irish traditional music by Louis Marcus and concerts by folk legends such as Paul Brady, Martin Carthy and Dave Swarbrick are among the highlights of this year’s 33rd Cork Folk Festival, which starts on Thursday and runs until Sunday at venues around the city.
Marcus made Flea Ceoil when he went to Kilrush, Co Clare, and filmed a festival at a time when interest in traditional Irish music was being revitalised. This is being shown as part of double-bill with a French film on Irish music, La Reve Celtique, at the Triskel Arts Centre on Sunday.
The Triskel is also the venue for Paul Brady, who is making his first appearance at the Cork Folk Festival since 1985.
One of the most popular events every year is the free open-air Céilí Mór on the Grand Parade. The Kilfenora Céilí Band will be among the performers.
