Italian opera star Luciano Pavarotti left hospital today after undergoing more than two weeks of tests and treatment linked to his battle with cancer.

The 71-year-old singer, considered one of the greatest tenors of his generation, underwent surgery in July 2006 to remove a pancreatic tumour. He was admitted to hospital with a high fever on August 8th in his hometown of Modena.

The hospital said Pavarotti was transferred to his home at 6am local time, presumably to avoid reporters.

But Pavarotti would have to remain in "close contact" with the hospital's cancer department, it said in a statement.

"His recovery from the causes of his treatment and the stabilisation of his clinical situation ... make it possible for the patient to continue convalescing in the serenity of his family home," said the hospital.

The singer was originally expected to be released a few days after being admitted for treatment. But his wife Nicoletta Mantovani - 34 years his junior - later said Pavarotti wanted to remain in hospital as he felt more comfortable there.
