Tens of thousands of workers are expected to attend protest rallies tomorrow afternoon in pursuit of increased redundancy rights.

Although trade unions organising the "national day of protest" have stressed the event is not a strike, there are fears it may cause widespread disruption of public transport.

In Dublin an anticipated 10,000 demonstrators will assemble in Smithfield Square at 2 p.m. and march on the Office of the Tanaiste, demanding a substantial increase in statutory redundancy entitlements.

Another 90,000 workers are expected to participate in rallies in Cork, Limerick, Galway, Waterford, Athlone, Dundalk, Clonmel and elsewhere, according to the TEEU, one of the unions behind the event.

Commuters have been warned that the protests may delay trains and buses.

The protesters are seeking an increase in statutory redundancy entitlements to three weeks' pay per year of service.

At present workers under 41 receive a half-week for each year, rising to a full week for over-41s.
