A 20-year-old male pedestrian has become the first person to die on the roads in 2007. The man was walking on Mail Coach Road, Sligo, at 3.45am yesterday when he was hit by a car. He was taken to Sligo General Hospital where he later died.
The last person to be killed on the roads in 2006 has been named as Paddy Daly (73), Rosemount, Moate, Co Westmeath. Mr Daly died when his car crashed into a wall near Ballinderry in Moate shortly before noon on New Year's Eve.
An 80-year-old woman was killed and her 73-year-old sister injured when they were struck by a car in Laytown, Co Meath on Saturday. Ita O'Brien (80), Eannafort Road, Raheny, Dublin, was crossing the Coast Road in Laytown with her sister at around 7pm when they were hit by a car.
