ASTRONOMER and author Carl Sagan has died. He was aged 62.

Sagan won the Pulitzer prize in 1978 for his book Dragons of Eden and was author of Intelligent Life in the Universe, Mars and the Mind of Man, and Other Worlds. He was a pioneer in exobiology, which investigates the possibility of extraterrestrial life.

Madonna defied animal protesters at the British premiere of the film Evita in London and arrived in what looked like a real fur coat.

Protesters, who have already objected to fur worn by Madonna in the movie, chanted Stop the torture, fur is dead", while one demonstrator, dressed as a raccoon, waved a banner reading "Cry for me", referring satirically to a song in the movie.
