When Greg Cordell lifted Carla Germaine's veil yesterday, it was the first time he had seen her face. The newlyweds won each other in a "lonely hearts" competition run by the BRMB radio station in Birmingham, England.
Germaine (23), and Cordell (28), tied the knot in a 20-minute civic ceremony at the city's Hyatt Hotel. As part of their prize they will also get a free honeymoon in the Bahamas, accompanied by a film crew and a reporter for a Sunday newspaper.
Mohammed Al Fayed wiped tears from his eyes yesterday morning as he listened to a tribute song to Princess Diana and his son Dodi, performed by George Benson. Mr Al Fayed was appearing on GMTV with the American singer who has written two songs dedicated to the couple who died in a car crash in Paris in 1997. The singer has lost three sons: one died of cot death, one was shot and one died of kidney failure.
The spurned ex-wife of British Foreign Secretary Robin Cook yesterday said if she had her time all over again, she would still marry him. Margaret Cook was promoting a book about her doomed marriage in which she portrayed the Labour minister as a heavy-drinking adulterer who sold his soul to Tony Blair.
Mr Cook left his long-standing wife at Heathrow Airport prior to their annual holiday after the 1997 general election and later married his mistress, Gaynor Regan.
