Works by Paul Cezanne are to be borrowed from museums in New York and Oslo for an exhibition in Tuscany to trace the French artist's influence on early 20th century Italian painting, organisers said yesterday.

Les baigneuses (The bathers), from New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art, and Portrait d'un homme assis (Portrait of a man sitting), owned by Oslo's National Museum, will be the centrepieces of the showing in the Fattori Museum from next month to April, 1998. Late paintings by Cezanne (18391906) were the basis for the cubist movement.

Alison Cockayne, the partner of former England rugby captain Will Carling, was yesterday continuing her recovery in hospital after collapsing while on holiday in the US. A spokesman for the couple said Ms Cockayne (28) was "maintaining progress" in the New York hospital where she is being treated for an infection. Carling (31) has been by her side - on Saturday he pulled out of presenting ITV's rugby coverage of the England-All Blacks match because of her illness.
