Prince Charles yesterday became the first British royal to visit Bhutan, a small Himalayan enclave bordered by India, China and Tibet.

Charles, on the final leg of a three-nation Asian tour, is visiting Buddhist monasteries and will spend time trekking in the hills.

Author and playwright Halldor Laxness has died. He was aged 95. Born in Reykjavik, he won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1955, the only Icelander ever to win a Nobel prize. He began his career as a surrealist novelist, but is best known for his social realism of the 1930s.
