The British Prime Minister, Mr Tony Blair, and Mr John Major were united yesterday in condemnation of the "tacky" exploitation of the memory of Princess Diana.

Downing Street was not specifying what the description applied to, but it is understood to be aimed at books, films and souvenirs. Mr Blair's spokesman told Sunday newspapers that he was concerned about the commercial exploitation of her death and the effect it was having on Prince William and Prince Harry.

Princess Diana's friends are speaking out to dispel claims by Mohammed al-Fayed that she was pregnant and planning to marry Dodi Fayed.

The princess told Annabel Goldsmith on the Friday before her fatal accident: "I'm having a wonderful time, but the last thing I need is a new marriage. I need it like a bad rash on my face." The disclosure came in the Sunday Telegraph from Rosa Monckton, who went on holiday with Diana in the Greek islands 10 days before she died.
