Medical tests carried out on President Boris Yeltsin yesterday showed his heart is functioning normally and that it has not been affected by a recent cold and viral infection, Interfax news agency said in Moscow.

"The heart's functions are normal," Interfax said in a brief report after Yeltsin was taken from a sanatorium to a heart centre for routine medical tests, which had been delayed because of his cold and viral respiratory infection.

Kremlin doctors later told a news conference that they had advised Yeltsin to spend five to seven more days recuperating.
